چکیده
Recent advances in triboelectricity provide an explanation for the common, but enigmatic, phenomenon.

Static electricity and rotameters.
Inaccuracies in Rotameters, caused by static charges, seem to be relatively common. Inaccuracies can be of a very serious order. Charges outside the tubes can be removed easily by antistatic spray. Charges inside the tube are very difficult to remove except by dismantling the apparatus or by the use of a radioactive pistol. Charges have been measured and are much larger than had been supposed a...
متن کاملLattice anisotropy as the microscopic origin of static stripes in cuprates
Structural distortions in cuprate materials offer a microscopic origin for anisotropies in electron transport in the basal plane. Using a real-space Hartree-Fock approach, we consider the ground states of the anisotropic Hubbard (txÞty) and t-J (txÞty ,JxÞJy) models. Symmetrical but inhomogeneous ~‘‘polaronic’’! charge structures in the isotropic models are altered even by rather small anisotro...
متن کاملMicroscopic Origin of the Bekenstein-Hawking Entropy
The Bekenstein-Hawking area-entropy relation SBH = A/4 is derived for a class of five-dimensional extremal black holes in string theory by counting the degeneracy of BPS soliton bound states.
متن کاملMicroscopic Origin of Cholesteric Pitch
We present a microscopic analysis of the instability of the nematic phase to chirality when molecular chirality is introduced perturbatively. We show that for central-force interactions the previously neglected short–range biaxial correlations play a crucial role in determining the cholesteric pitch. We propose a pseudoscalar strength which quantifies the chirality of a molecule.
متن کاملMicroscopic origin of granular ratcheting.
Numerical simulations of assemblies of grains under cyclic loading exhibit "granular ratcheting:" a small net deformation occurs with each cycle, leading to a linear accumulation of deformation with cycle number. We show that this is due to a curious property of the most frequently used models of the particle-particle interaction: namely, that the potential energy stored in contacts is path dep...
